He wasn't afraid.The Agency's maintenance crew was efficient, and his cell phone was powered up.Half an hour, they'd said.Forty minutes, tops.

Luckily he wasn't claustrophobic.With the lights out he couldn't even see the walls.He closed his eyes anyhow, as if he owned the darkness.

No sound yet from the repair people, just the white noise hum of central air-conditioning. He might be anywhere.Where would he choose? Nowhere he'd been before, that's for damn sure.

He wondered if Li Ann would end up with Mac after all.He'd love them both.He'd have to.

The metal shifted beneath his feet; a sickening pause and then--drop, fall, jerk, hold.The cables whined as he picked himself off the floor.

"Hey!"Cold under his fist but the sound was satisfying. He pounded the door again."Hey, what's going on?Hello?Anybody out there?"Nothing.

The whole was greater than the sum of its parts, he thought. Unless, of course, the sum was zero.

His glow-in-the-dark watch read four-fifteen.He had twenty-two minutes to go.

Tops.
