Author's Notes: Thanks to Wildy, always. If I could cheer Vic up, I would. Really.

If Mac hadn't been sitting next to him, morning paper splayed like his legs, elbows sticking out everywhere--well, not everywhere, just in Vic's direction--

"That new band's in town. What's it called?"

"Squeals."

"Wanna go?"

"They're all sold out."

"Oh."

--maybe he could have relaxed.Li Ann was reading a magazine.Vic couldn't tell which one when he glanced over,

"Do you think I'd look good in this?"

"Yeah, well, you'd look good in anything."

"Hmm."

the sunlight hit the glossy pages and blinded him.Secretly, Vic thought Mac was right. Secretly, Vic thoght Mac should be shot at point blank range and put out of his misery.

He scraped back his chair--metal and too small for anyone over the age of ten--until he hit the cafe window. He crossed his left ankle over his right knee, realized he should have taken his drink from the table, uncrossed his leg, took his drink.

"Fuck."

and sat back again. It was a beautiful July afternoon.Everyone under the age of thirty was walking the main streets, and this was a great spot from which to watch them.Vic took a sip of--what had he ordered?--and sighed.

Mac was watching him.Vic frowned.

"What?"

"Did you just curse?"

"*What*?No, I didn't--"

He looked away. Hazelnut coffee, iced, with milk and sugar.Vic took a long drink. Put the empty glass down on the table. Let his eyes get caught by the sway of female hips in low-slung pants as they passed by.

"Versace or Hugo Boss?"

"Boss."

"Armani or Prada?"

"Prada."

"Dolce and Gabana?"

Vic squinted into the glare of the page Li Ann was displaying.Emaciated boy, something tight and colorful, too colorful, clownlike, even,

"Fuck.Fuck this." and realized he was getting a headache.

"Even I wouldn't wear that."

Li Ann looked at Mac, then at the photo, and shrugged."I guess you're right. Black really is your color."

Useless, Vic thought, and shut his eyes.Utterly useless.Today and every other day ahead of him.

The End
