Fandom: Highlander, X-Files
Spoilers: AU after Dead/Alive. Written in retaliation against CC, and as something hopefully pleasant to come home to for those who got to go on the Toronto trip.
Rated: M for implied M/M (yes, I finally did give in)
Disclaimer: Alex belongs to CC who has sorely misused him and will now (as rumors go) kill him off. Cory belongs to Panzer and Rysher and while I do not claim their creation, they belong to me as all those writers and producers out there seem to not know when they've struck gold!
Author's Notes: Its been a hot, overheated week here in NYC (I took a 40min. walk uphill today and came home sweating my ass off, though it did give me some nice color). Anyway its supposed to rain tonight and cool us all off, so in celebration I wrote this little bit. I could really try writing one whole story with all of this, but that never works for me as I never finish the stories. A series where every story is a few paragraphs just seems easier as there is no obligation to write more since each part may stand on its own.

Alex once again awoke in a sweat, every inch of his body alive with passion. Again the same dream plagued him, that dream which filled his mind and controlled his body. He breathed heavily; the condensed perfume of the thick, moist air making him feel sluggish and unsatisfied. He had been here now for a week, and most nights there was the dream -- the one which left him throbbing for more when he woke. It was strange really; Alex had never been a consistent dreamer; most nights, nightmare visions of his life plagued him -- but this was different. This was something indescribably near perfection, something that felt consistent and warm. Then there was the other, the person who gave and took so much. The man with the body of Adonis and a touch that scorched like fire, and his face⦠that face haunted Alex, because it was his own. At first Alex had thought it was his own reflection, but the face was younger, less jaded. More loving.
Shrugging off the sheets, Alex got out of bed. This thinking wasn't helping. Not bothering to grab a robe and cover his nakedness, he walked out on to the balcony. Sighing at the cool, fierce breeze, he smiled. A storm was coming; he knew it. To his left he heard a small, awed little gasp. He grinned. The serving girl was the only servant whose room was in the main house. Alex knew that she liked to come out at nightfall, because he often heard her humming long into the night; sometimes her songs becoming another element of his dreams, sometimes the only comfort in a torture of nightmares.
Letting out a frustrated growl, Alex turned. The girl was still there, eyes fixed upon his, challenging, as if asking; What do you know? How much do you know?
Alex was sick of women, he'd seen enough of Marita's kind, and he smiled cynically. Too old now for the naivite and innocence of the young, too tired to play the mind games of the seasoned. Shaking his head, he turned away from the girl and looked out once more at the bayou.

A distance away, from another balcony, Cory smiled. For the last three nights Yvette had been slipping the pills into Alex's drinks. And for the past three nights Cory had been the phantom of Alex's dreams. The unseen lover, the unknown opportunist, the unnamed host. From this distance, he could see the sweat of the warm, New Orleans light on Alex's body, and he had also seen what had passed between him and Yvette. It little amazed him that she would want him, and it had surprised him that Alex had not tried after her, yet perhaps he gave him too little credit. Who knew? The world was full of surprises. Thunder cracked the night's silence, lightning illuminating all. For a second before he retired, Cory knew that in the light of the night, he had been seen. The storm had broken; the game begun.
Then let us play, he thought. You know now that I am no phantom; I know that you're no imbecile. Let us see where this game will lead. As midnight torrents fell, Alex now understood, and as the cooling water of the storm ran over him, he too realized that the game had begun.
